Drew William Graves, Assault, Minnesota 2017

RED LAKE, MINN. – A Red Lake man is headed to federal prison after pleading guilty to a savage attack on a woman within the boundaries of the Red Lake Indian Reservation. DREW WILLIAM GRAVES, 29, was sentenced to 41 months behind bars on May 17, 2017, before Senior Judge Paul A. Magnuson in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Acting United States Attorney Gregory G. Brooker announced the sentencing, detailing a brutal assault that occurred on March 25, 2016. Graves violently attacked the female victim, inflicting serious bodily injury. The details, laid bare in court documents, paint a disturbing picture of callous disregard for human life.

According to the defendant’s guilty plea, Graves intentionally slammed a car door on the victim’s arm, breaking it. He then escalated the violence, throwing her to the ground and repeatedly kicking her. The attack, committed on tribal land, triggered a joint investigation that ultimately led to his conviction.

The case was a collaborative effort between the Red Lake Tribal Police Department and the FBI Headwaters Safe Trails Task Force. Their relentless work brought Graves to justice, sending a clear message that violence against anyone – especially within vulnerable communities – will not be tolerated. Assistant U.S. Attorney Clifford B. Wardlaw skillfully prosecuted the case, securing the 41-month sentence.

Graves pleaded guilty to one count of assault resulting in serious bodily injury on December 29, 2016. In addition to the prison sentence, he will also serve three years of supervised release upon his eventual release. This case underscores the Justice Department’s commitment to tribal safety and the prosecution of violent crime in Indian Country.
