Remon Daniel, Produce Vendor Scam, California 2016
In a brazen scheme to defraud produce vendors, Remon Issa Daniel, 35, of Redwood City, California, has been sentenced to 41 months in federal prison for his role in swindling over $2 million worth of fruits and vegetables from nearly 40 businesses. This egregious crime was perpetrated over a two-year period, from 2014 to 2016.
According to the United States Attorney's Office, Remon Daniel pretended to be employed by reputable produce companies, ordering large loads of fruits and vegetables on credit. However, he had no intention of paying for the goods, and the vendors were left with significant financial losses. In a desperate attempt to deceive his victims, Remon Daniel sent fake deposit slips to convince the vendors that he had made payments for the produce.
However, once the vendors released the produce to Remon Daniel, they discovered that the deposited checks had bounced due to insufficient funds. This heartless scheme was uncovered when Remon Daniel was arrested on February 25, 2016.
The investigation revealed that Remon Daniel had defrauded at least 38 different businesses, ordering produce primarily from companies in California, Arizona, and Texas. His scam was uncovered when he pleaded guilty to wire fraud on July 7, 2016. As part of his plea agreement, Remon Daniel admitted to three counts of wire fraud, with the remaining counts dismissed.
As a result of his crimes, Remon Daniel has been ordered to pay $1,696,445.70 in restitution to his victims. He will also serve three years of supervised release in addition to his prison term. The sentence was handed down by Honorable Lucy H. Koh, U.S. District Judge.
The investigation was led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with the assistance of U.S. Attorney Amber Rosen and her team. This case serves as a reminder of the importance of due diligence in business transactions and the severe consequences of such egregious crimes.
The United States Attorney's Office has stated that this case is a prime example of the FBI's commitment to protecting the integrity of the produce industry and holding individuals accountable for their actions.
