Ricardo Reyes, Receiving Child Pornography, Nebraska 2013

Published January 29, 2015

A disturbing case of child exploitation has come to light in South Omaha, Nebraska. Ricardo Reyes, 33, a Mexican national, has been sentenced to 7 years in prison for receiving child pornography.

The Honorable Richard G. Kopf, Senior United States District Court Judge, handed down the sentence. There is no parole in the federal system, meaning Reyes will serve every day of his 7-year sentence.

Reyes will also face a 5-year term of supervised release after his release from prison. However, if he is deported, the terms of his release will be unclear.

The investigation into Reyes began in October 2012, when investigators with the Nebraska State Patrol and FBI Cyber Crimes Task Force downloaded several images of child pornography from a South Omaha residence.

A federal search warrant was served on January 15, 2013, and forensic analysis of Reyes's computer revealed approximately 100 videos of child pornography. The videos included children from 2 to 9 years of age engaged in various sexual acts.

Reyes admitted to downloading child pornography and keeping the child pornography he downloaded. This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006 by the U.S. government.

Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to better locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims. For more information about Project Safe Childhood, please visit www.projectsafechildhood.gov.
