Richard Canterbury, Abusive Sexual Contact, West Virginia 2014
A former Federal Bureau of Prisons employee has been sentenced to 14 months in federal prison for a sex crime committed against a ward at the Federal Prison Camp at Alderson.
Richard Canterbury, 50, of Lewisburg, West Virginia, was sentenced by United States District Judge Irene C. Berger after pleading guilty to abusive sexual contact involving a ward in January 2015.
The crime was committed in April 2014, when Canterbury was overseeing the work of the female inmate at the Federal Prison Camp at Alderson. He admitted to touching the breasts of the inmate.
Canterbury will also be required to register as a sex offender and be on supervised release for five years following his release from prison.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with Assistant United States Attorney John File handling the prosecution.
The sentencing brings an end to a case that involved the abuse of power by a Federal Bureau of Prisons employee.
