Grimy Times Exclusive: Alabama Man Sentenced for Failure to Register as Sex Offender

Birmingham, Alabama - In a shocking case, Ricky Dion Odom, a 47-year-old Shelby County man, was sentenced to 24 months incarceration for failure to register as a sex offender. The sentencing occurred on no date given in the Northern District of Alabama.

According to court documents, Odom is required to register under the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA). On or about November 1, 2018, and continuing until on or about February 4, 2019, Odom traveled from the State of Louisiana to the State of Alabama and knowingly failed to register as required by SORNA.

Odom plead guilty in July 2019. In addition to the term of imprisonment imposed, Odom was ordered to serve five years of supervised release. This shocking case highlights the importance of community awareness and public safety.

United States Attorney Jay E. Town emphasized the significance of this case, stating, "Failure to register as a sex offender is not only a matter of public safety, but it is our primary mechanism by which every member of the community can learn of sex offenders living among us."

The case was investigated by the United States Marshal Service for the Northern District of Alabama, Middle District of Alabama, Eastern District of Louisiana, Northern District of Florida, and Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force, along with the assistance of St. Tammany Parish (LA) Sheriff’s Office, Okaloosa County (FL) Sheriff’s Office, Jackson County (AL) Sheriff’s Office, Shelby County (AL) Sheriff’s Office, and the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
