South Bend Man Sentenced to 3 Years for Tax Evasion

Robert E. Miller, 60, of South Bend, Indiana, was sentenced to 37 months of imprisonment for tax evasion.

The sentence, handed down by District Judge Jon E. DeGuilio, also included 2 years of supervised release and $264,951.70 in restitution.

Miller was found guilty of the felony offense of tax evasion, which involved eight years of tax payment evasion from 1999 to 2009, despite earning over $2.1 million in adjusted gross income and $1.1 million in taxable income.

According to investigators, Miller tried to hide his assets and income from the IRS by discontinuing his use of bank accounts in May 2007 and conducting all of his transactions in cash and pre-paid debit cards.

Prosecutors also alleged that Miller attempted to obstruct justice by making false statements during questioning by IRS agents and lying on material points during his testimony at trial.

This case was the result of an investigation by the Internal Revenue Service, which was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Donald Schmid.
