Robert Kills Plenty, Assaulting, South Dakota 2024
Piercing the facade of law and order in South Dakota, a Rosebud man has been brought to justice for a violent crime against a federal officer. Robert Kills Plenty, a 27-year-old from Rosebud, was sentenced to six months in federal prison for assaulting, resisting, and impeding a federal officer.
On November 24, 2022, Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services operated a sobriety checkpoint near St. Francis, South Dakota. Kills Plenty drove through the inspection area, but instead of complying with the investigation, he fled in his vehicle, leading officers on a high-speed chase.
The chase ended with Kills Plenty being apprehended, but his violent behavior didn't stop there. As he was being transported to the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Adult Corrections Facility (RSTACF), he became argumentative and combative, ultimately spitting on a correctional officer and striking the officer in the face with saliva. The officer was employed by the RSTACF pursuant to a contract between the Rosebud Sioux Tribe and the U.S. Department of Interior, Bureau of Indian Affairs.
This heinous act of violence has earned Kills Plenty a six-month prison sentence, followed by six months of home confinement, and 30 months of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Tim Maher prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services. Chief Judge Robert A. Lange, U.S. District Court, handed down the sentence on July 22, 2024.
Kills Plenty was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal to serve his sentence. The Rosebud community can now breathe a sigh of relief, knowing that justice has been served for this egregious crime.
As the Grimy Times continues to expose the darker side of law enforcement, we remind our readers that public safety is a top priority.
