Robert Lee Moran, Fentanyl Distribution, West Virginia 2024

BECKLEY, W.Va. – A Fayette County man has been sentenced to prison for his role in a fentanyl distribution crime that shook the small town of Mount Hope.

Robert Lee Moran, 47, was handed down a nine-month prison sentence, followed by three years of supervised release, for distributing the deadly opioid.

According to court documents and statements made in court, on January 29, 2024, Moran distributed approximately 0.857 grams of fentanyl to a confidential informant for $100 in Beckley. As part of his guilty plea, Moran admitted to the transaction and to arranging it beforehand.

The transaction was just the tip of the iceberg for Moran’s involvement in the fentanyl trade. On April 30, 2024, law enforcement officers executed a search warrant at Moran’s residence and seized two bags of suspected fentanyl, multiple firearms and drug trafficking paraphernalia.

Moran has a long history of crime, including prior convictions for domestic battery, destruction of property, possession of a hoax bomb, and harboring a fugitive. The judge presiding over the case took these past convictions into consideration when handing down the sentence.

Acting United States Attorney Lisa G. Johnston praised the investigative work of the Beckley/Raleigh County Drug and Violent Crime Unit, which consists of officers from the West Virginia State Police, the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Department, and the Beckley Police Department.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Brian D. Parsons and Alexander A. Redmon.
