Tragedy on Soldier Creek: Robert Staples, Jr. Sentenced for Involuntary Manslaughter

On September 14, 2018, a devastating incident shook the Soldier Creek community when Robert Staples, Jr., 35, struck two children with his vehicle, leaving one dead.

The incident occurred when Staples was backing a vehicle out of his driveway, a common thoroughfare for children playing in the street. Tragically, Staples had THC in his bloodstream at the time of the wreck.

Staples was subsequently indicted by a federal grand jury on February 13, 2019. He pleaded guilty to the charges on May 28, 2019.

On August 12, 2019, U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange handed down a 37-month prison sentence to Staples, along with 2 years of supervised release. Additionally, Staples was required to pay a special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund in the amount of $100.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael J. Elmore led the prosecution of the case. The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services.

Following his sentencing, Staples was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service. This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of reckless behavior.
