Pittsburgh Felon Charged with Illegally Possessing a Revolver

A 21-year-old Pittsburgh resident has been indicted by a federal grand jury for violating federal firearms laws.

According to the indictment, Robert Tippett possessed a loaded .357 caliber Smith & Wesson revolver on May 4, 2018. It is unlawful for Tippett, who has previously been convicted of a crime punishable by a term of imprisonment exceeding one year, to possess a firearm.

The law provides for a maximum total sentence of 10 years in prison, a fine of $250,000 or both. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed would be based upon the seriousness of the offense and the prior criminal history of the defendant.

Tippett's indictment is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a collaborative effort by federal, state and local law enforcement agencies, prosecutors and communities to prevent, deter and prosecute gun crime.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police conducted the investigation leading to the indictment in this case. Assistant United States Attorney Jeffrey R. Bengel is prosecuting this case on behalf of the government.

A defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

Robert Tippett, 21, has been charged with one count of violating federal firearms laws. He faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, a fine of $250,000 or both. The case is currently pending and no sentencing date has been set.
