Fentanyl Trafficking in Maine: Waterville Man Sentenced to 15 Years

BANGOR, Maine - In a crackdown on narcotics trafficking, a 32-year-old man from Waterville was handed a 15-year prison sentence for his role in distributing over 400 grams of fentanyl in Kennebec County. Rodney Lacroix, a repeat offender, met the requirements for enhanced penalties due to his 2013 federal conviction for conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute oxycodone and cocaine.

According to court records, Lacroix engaged in a fentanyl distribution operation between May 2017 and October 2018. The illicit substances were sourced from outside the state, and a network of distributors was utilized to facilitate the sale of more than 400 grams of the highly potent opioid.

U.S. District Judge John A. Woodcock, Jr. handed down the sentence in federal court, accompanied by a 10-year supervised release period. Lacroix had previously pleaded guilty in December 2020.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration led the investigation into Lacroix's activities, collaborating with local law enforcement agencies, including the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency, the Waterville Police Department, and the Maine State Police.

As a result of the investigation, Lacroix has been held accountable for his role in perpetuating the opioid crisis in Maine. His sentencing serves as a stark reminder of the severity of the consequences for those involved in narcotics trafficking.
