Rodrick Mitchell, Felon in Possession of Firearm, Missouri 2020
ST. LOUIS – A St. Louis County man was convicted of a serious crime after a jury found him guilty of being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Rodrick Mitchell, 34, of Breckenridge Hills, Missouri, was convicted of one charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm, a crime that can have severe consequences.
According to court documents, Mitchell's girlfriend went to the Wentzville Police Department on July 9, 2020, and reported that she had just left Mitchell at a hotel after becoming upset with him. She told police that she was afraid of him because he has a temper and was violent, and that she wanted to return their rental car but could not because there was a gun hidden under the car's hood.
Police found a 9mm Smith & Wesson handgun near the driver's side fender and a drum magazine loaded with 38 rounds near the air filter. Mitchell's DNA was found on the gun, linking him to the crime.
Mitchell was indicted on March 10, 2021, on the gun charge. The Wentzville Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives investigated the case.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Ashley M. Walker and Catherine Hoag are prosecuting the case. Mitchell is scheduled to be sentenced on December 13 and could face up to 10 years in prison.
The conviction is a stark reminder of the consequences of possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. Mitchell's actions put himself and others at risk, and his conviction is a testament to the hard work of law enforcement and prosecutors.
