FRESNO, Calif. — A convicted felon’s deceitful game has finally caught up with him. Rojelio Martin, 36, of Tulare, was sentenced to two years and 11 months in prison for making false statements to his federal probation officer.
According to court documents, Martin was sentenced in 2013 to 33 months in prison and ordered to pay $44,860 in restitution for defrauding 75 taxpayers of their tax refunds. His scheme was nothing short of brazen.
After serving his prison sentence, Martin was released in 2016. But instead of making amends, he failed to make the court-ordered restitution payments. He claimed that health-related absences from work prevented him from paying restitution, a claim that would later be revealed as a desperate lie.
On December 13, 2017, Martin gave his supervising U.S. Probation Officer a fraudulent and forged letter from his doctor and a fraudulent statement of earnings to support his claim. It was a move that would seal his fate.
The case was the result of an investigation by IRS Criminal Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher D. Baker prosecuted the case, working tirelessly to bring Martin to justice.
Martin’s sentence serves as a reminder that those who break the law will face consequences. His deceitful actions will now cost him two years and 11 months in prison, a price he will pay for his crimes.
The people of California can rest a little easier knowing that justice has been served. And as for Rojelio Martin, his future is now locked away behind bars.
