FORT MYERS, FL – Ronald Dale Perkins, 45, is headed to federal prison for nearly five years after a brazen deal with an undercover agent: a sawed-off shotgun and a stash of methamphetamine. U.S. District Judge Sheri Polster Chappell handed down the four year and nine month sentence Wednesday, adding to a rap sheet already nine convictions long.
The deal went down April 5, 2022, according to court documents. Perkins, despite his lengthy criminal history, willingly sold the illegal .410 caliber shotgun and drugs to the ATF operative. The specifics of how the ATF initially targeted Perkins remain undisclosed, but the operation clearly aimed to disrupt the flow of weapons and narcotics onto the streets of Fort Myers.
Federal prosecutors didn’t mince words, highlighting Perkins’ repeat offender status. Assistant United States Attorney Mark Morgan successfully argued for a substantial sentence, emphasizing the danger posed by individuals like Perkins who repeatedly disregard the law and endanger public safety. The court also ordered Perkins to forfeit the shotgun used in the crime.
This case is being touted as a win for “Project Safe Neighborhoods” (PSN), a broad initiative that attempts to coordinate federal, state, and local law enforcement efforts to combat violent crime. The Department of Justice launched a strengthened version of PSN in May 2021, focusing on building trust with communities, supporting violence prevention programs, and prioritizing enforcement.
While the DOJ points to PSN as a key component in reducing crime, critics often question the effectiveness of such programs, arguing they often focus on symptoms rather than root causes. However, in this instance, the ATF’s Tampa Field Division investigation clearly resulted in the removal of a dangerous felon and illegal firearms from circulation. Perkins pleaded guilty on September 7, 2022, avoiding a potentially longer sentence had the case gone to trial.
The sentencing of Ronald Dale Perkins serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against gun violence and drug trafficking in Florida. With a history of convictions already weighing him down, Perkins will now spend the next four years and nine months behind bars, and will forfeit the weapon he used to further his criminal enterprise.
