Rot Van Nguyen, Failure to Register as Sex Offender, Louisiana 2018

A California man has pleaded guilty to failing to register as a sex offender in Louisiana, federal authorities announced.

Rot Van Nguyen, 56, of San Jose, California, pleaded guilty to one count of failure to register as a sex offender under the federal Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA) before U.S. District Court Judge Carl J. Barbier.

According to court documents, Nguyen was convicted in California in 2009 for lewd or lascivious acts on a child under 14 years of age, a violation of California Penal Code Section 288(a).

After his release from prison, Nguyen was obligated to register as a sex offender for life. In November 2015, while he was on probation, Nguyen cut off a GPS monitor required by California Parole and absconded from supervision.

He remained at large until December 12, 2017, when members of the U.S. Marshal's Task Force and Louisiana State Troopers apprehended Nguyen at a casino in New Orleans.

After his arrest, Nguyen admitted to living in Houma prior to moving to New Orleans, and that he was aware of his obligation to register as a sex offender in Louisiana pursuant to SORNA.

Nguyen faces a maximum term of 10 years in prison and a $250,000.00 fine. He also faces a term of supervised release of between 5 years and life.

Judge Barbier set Nguyen's sentencing for June 14, 2018.
