SADICK EDUSEI KISSI, Money Laundering, New York 2021
Grimy Times - A North Dakota man has been convicted of laundering over $1 million from a Ghana-based criminal enterprise that targeted victims across the United States.
According to a federal indictment, SADICK EDUSEI KISSI, 25, of Dickinson, North Dakota, was convicted by a jury of one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering, one count of receipt of stolen money, and one count of conspiracy to receive stolen money.
The indictment alleged that KISSI participated in a conspiracy based in the Republic of Ghana that committed a series of romance scams against individuals and businesses located across the United States, including in the Southern District of New York.
The romance scams were conducted by using electronic messages sent via email, text messaging, or online dating websites that deluded victims into believing they were in a romantic relationship with a fake identity assumed by members of the Enterprise.
Once members of the Enterprise had gained the trust of the victims, they used false pretenses to cause the victims to wire money to bank accounts controlled by members of the Enterprise, including KISSI. KISSI received money sent by victims of the Enterprise into personal bank accounts located in the Bronx, New York.
KISSI was previously arrested on February 5, 2021. He will be sentenced before U.S. District Judge Paul A. Crotty at a later date.
The maximum potential sentences are 20 years in prison for conspiracy to commit money laundering, 10 years in prison for receipt of stolen money, and 5 years in prison for conspiracy to receive stolen money.
The prosecution of this case is being handled by the Office’s Complex Frauds and Cybercrime Unit. Assistant United States Attorneys Katherine C. Reilly, Mitzi Steiner, and Sagar Ravi are in charge of the prosecution.
The FBI commended the outstanding investigative work of its agents in this case.
