Mexican National Charged with Reentry in Vermont

Burlington, Vermont – A Burlington man has been charged with illegally reentering the United States, officials announced Monday. Samuel Alfaro-Sanchez, 31, a citizen of Mexico, was taken into custody on August 13, 2025, after being found in the US.

According to an indictment returned on August 21, 2025, Alfaro-Sanchez has repeatedly entered the US after having been removed on prior occasions. In 2008, he voluntarily returned to Mexico after being apprehended near Tucson, Arizona. In 2018, he was removed from the US twice after being apprehended near Paso Del Norte, Texas, and Sasabe, Arizona, respectively. In 2019, he was removed from the US after being apprehended near El Paso, Texas. In 2020, he was expelled from the US twice in September after being apprehended on two separate occasions near Douglas, Arizona. In 2021, he was expelled from the US after being apprehended near Douglas, Arizona.

Alfaro-Sanchez entered a plea of not guilty to the charges during an arraignment on August 28, 2025, before United States Magistrate Judge Kevin J. Doyle. Judge Doyle ordered that Alfaro-Sanchez be detained during the pendency of this matter.

The United States Attorney's Office emphasizes that an indictment contains allegations only and that Alfaro-Sanchez is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. Alfaro-Sanchez faces up to 2 years' imprisonment if convicted.

Acting United States Attorney Michael P. Drescher commended the investigatory efforts of the United States Border Patrol.
