Cocaine Worth $1,000,000.00 Left Behind in a Car, a Virgin Islands Man Charged with Possession with Intent to Distribute

St. Thomas, VI - In a shocking turn of events, 42-year-old Santos Jiminez Caraballo of the Dominican Republic has been charged with possession with intent to distribute cocaine in the United States Virgin Islands.

A federal grand jury returned an indictment charging Caraballo with possession with intent to distribute cocaine, following a sting operation where he negotiated the sale of 10 kilograms of cocaine to an undercover federal agent. The deal was to be finalized on December 2, 2021, at an undisclosed location on St. Thomas.

However, things took a dramatic turn when Caraballo fled the scene, first by car and then by foot, leaving behind the cocaine in his vehicle. The 10 kilograms of cocaine, valued at $1,000,000.00, were seized by authorities as evidence.

Caraballo now faces a sentence of up to 20 years in prison and a $1,000,000.00 fine if convicted. The case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Kimberly M. Riley.

It's worth noting that an indictment is merely a formal charging document, and Caraballo is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

United States Attorney Delia L. Smith reminds the public to remain vigilant in the fight against narcotics trafficking, as cases like this one highlight the importance of collaboration between law enforcement agencies.
