Scott Klingerman, Wire Fraud, Indiana 2015

South Bend, IN – June 15, 2015 – A South Bend man has been sentenced to 20 months in federal prison for wire fraud, the result of a scheme that bilked two organizations out of nearly $33,000.

Scott Klingerman, 45, was sentenced to 20 months imprisonment and 2 years of supervised release, U.S. Attorney David Capp announced. He was also ordered to pay restitution of $26,654.62 to the Walkerton-Lincoln Township Public Library, and $6,238.68 to the State of Indiana, totaling $32,893.30.

According to documents in the case, Klingerman was Interim Director of the Walkerton-Lincoln Township Public Library in Walkerton, Indiana, from 2010 through 2013. In 2012, he used library funds to pay for personal expenses, including his health club membership and rooms at a hotel in Tennessee, all without authorization.

The investigation into Klingerman’s activities was led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jesse M. Barrett.

Klingerman’s scheme was uncovered after a lengthy investigation by federal authorities. The 20-month sentence handed down by the court is a significant blow to the defendant, who has been held accountable for his actions.

The case serves as a reminder that those who abuse their positions of power and trust will be held accountable for their actions. The U.S. Attorney’s Office will continue to work tirelessly to protect the public and ensure that those who commit crimes are brought to justice.

As a result of Klingerman’s actions, the public library and the State of Indiana were left to pick up the pieces and deal with the financial fallout. The restitution ordered by the court will help to compensate for the losses suffered by these two organizations.

The sentence handed down in this case should serve as a warning to others who would attempt to engage in similar schemes. The U.S. Attorney’s Office will continue to investigate and prosecute cases involving public corruption and financial crimes to the fullest extent of the law.
