Sean Barrett, Mail Delay, New York 2020

BUFFALO, NY - A U.S. Postal Service mail carrier was fined $600 for failing to deliver over 1,300 pieces of mail in Youngstown, NY.

Sean Barrett, 30, of Sanborn, NY, was convicted of delay or destruction of mail, according to U.S. Attorney James P. Kennedy, Jr.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul E. Bonanno handled the case, which involved Barrett's failure to deliver 1,314 mail pieces, including 502 first class mailings, two certified mailings, and 794 standard mailings, on October 13, 2020.

Instead of delivering the mail, Barrett placed them in a wooded area off Pletcher Road in Youngstown, where they were later recovered by law enforcement officers.

On October 19, 2020, 14 bundles of banded Western New York Value newspapers were discovered discarded in a wooded area just west of where the mail pieces were found.

Barrett admitted to dumping the mail and newspapers during an interview with USPS agents on October 20, 2020.

The sentencing is the result of an investigation by the United States Postal Service, Office of Inspector General, and the Lewiston Police Department.

The case highlights the importance of accountability and integrity in the mail delivery process.
