Seddrick Banks, Drug Trafficking & Dismemberment, WV, 2023

CLARKSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA – A Georgia man is facing a half-century behind bars for a drug operation that spiraled into a horrific cover-up. Seddrick Banks, 30, of Cartersville, Georgia, was sentenced today to 50 years in federal prison for trafficking narcotics and attempting to erase evidence of a fatal overdose in the most gruesome way imaginable.

Banks wasn’t just slinging dope; he was moving serious weight. Evidence presented at the June 2021 trial revealed he distributed over 4.5 kilograms of methamphetamine, along with cocaine hydrochloride and fentanyl, throughout Marion County and beyond. The operation involved regular trips from Georgia to West Virginia, with Banks using motel and hotel rooms as mobile distribution centers.

The case took a dark turn when 20-year-old Courtney Dubois overdosed on fentanyl at a Lewis County motel on August 9, 2018. Rather than call for help, Banks and an accomplice took her body back to Georgia. There, they didn’t bury her. They dismembered her, disposing of the remains at a local landfill in a desperate and sickening attempt to conceal the overdose and their involvement.

The investigation, a multi-agency effort, peeled back layers of deceit and revealed the full extent of Banks’ criminal enterprise. The Greater Harrison Drug & Violent Crimes Task Force, funded by the HIDTA program, led the charge, working alongside the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the Three Rivers Drug & Violent Crimes Task Force, the West Virginia State Police, and law enforcement from Bartow County, Georgia, the FBI, and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Brandon S. Flower and Andrew M. Cogar successfully prosecuted Banks, securing the lengthy sentence handed down by Chief U.S. District Judge Thomas S. Kleeh. The 50-year term reflects the severity of the crimes – not just the drug trafficking, but the calculated and monstrous act of defiling a young woman’s remains to avoid accountability.

While Banks is headed to prison, the investigation remains open regarding the co-conspirator involved in the dismemberment and disposal of Dubois’ body. Authorities are signaling further charges are likely as they continue to untangle the full web of criminal activity connected to this case. This sentence serves as a grim reminder of the deadly consequences of the opioid crisis and the lengths to which some will go to protect their illicit profits.
