Seung-Hui Cho, Violent Crime, Maryland 2007

In a shocking turn of events, Seung-Hui Cho, a 23-year-old South Korean-born student, was charged with multiple federal crimes related to a devastating mass shooting that shook the nation. On October 22, 2007, the case was filed in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, but the crime itself occurred at Virginia Tech, a university in Blacksburg, Virginia. However, the charges were later refiled in the District of Maryland on the same date as a federal case. Cho was accused of using a Glock 19 semi-automatic handgun to carry out the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history, resulting in the deaths of 32 people and injuring 17 others on April 16, 2007. In the aftermath of the tragedy, Cho took his own life. The charges brought against him in the federal case included use of a firearm in relation to a crime of violence, murder, and other related offenses. Although Cho was not alive to stand trial, the charges were still pursued by the federal authorities. The District of Maryland Court case was a result of the federal investigation. The court's decision was to drop the charges against Cho due to his death, effectively ending the case. The case served as a catalyst for a national conversation about gun control, mental health, and campus safety.
