Michigan Man Sentenced for Possession of Sawed-off Shotgun

Marquette, Michigan - A convicted felon was sentenced to federal prison for being in possession of a firearm on the Sault Tribe Reservation.

Shawn Marshall Brewer, 23, of St. Ignace, Michigan, was found guilty of being a felon in possession of a firearm and sentenced to 48 months in federal prison.

The crime took place on August 2011 when Brewer's parole officer and law enforcement visited him and discovered a sawed-off 16-gauge shotgun, along with 38 knives, swords, a hatchet, a throwing star, and 16-gauge shotgun ammunition in his possession.

The shotgun barrel had been cut down to just over 15 inches in length, and the shoulder stock had been replaced with a homemade pistol grip.

Shawn Marshall Brewer, a convicted felon on parole after a 2009 conviction for unlawfully driving away a motor vehicle, received a harsh sentence for his crime.

The Sault Sainte Marie Tribal Police, the Michigan State Police, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation investigated the case.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul D. Lochner prosecuted the case, resulting in Brewer's conviction and sentencing.

Brewer must serve three years of supervised release following his release from prison and pay a $100 special assessment.
