Local Man Charged with Silk Road Narcotics and Firearms Sales
Baltimore, MD - Sheldon Kennedy, 26, of Lincoln, Nebraska, was charged by complaint on January 31, 2014, for his alleged involvement in the sale of narcotics, guns, and counterfeit currency on the Silk Road website.
According to the complaint, Kennedy, who used aliases to sell cocaine and a pistol, was not licensed to sell firearms. He also sold counterfeit currency to another individual in Maryland on Silk Road. In addition, agents intercepted a package Kennedy mailed to an individual in England containing 110 grams of DMT, a controlled substance.
On June 28, 2013, a search warrant was executed at Kennedy's home, where ten firearms were seized, along with ammunition and illegal drugs.
Kennedy faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison for conspiracy to traffic controlled substances, and five years in prison each for possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking offense, interstate sale or transfer of a firearm without a license to another unlicensed person, and conspiracy to pass counterfeit money.
A complaint is not a finding of guilt. An individual charged by complaint is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty at some later criminal proceedings.
Kennedy was arrested on June 27, 2014, in Miami, Florida. The investigation was led by the United States Attorney for the District of Maryland, Rod J. Rosenstein, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives - Baltimore Field Division, among others.
