Local Woman's Desperate Deception Exposed

HARRISBURG, PA - In a shocking turn of events, 48-year-old Shelley Noreika of Newville, PA, has pleaded guilty to making false statements concerning her 5-year-old daughter's medical care.

According to the United States Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, Noreika admitted to fabricating a fake seizure episode involving her daughter on February 4, 2020. The mother then videotaped the event and emailed the footage to her daughter's pediatric neurologist, along with false statements about the child's medical condition.

This was not an isolated incident. On multiple occasions, Noreika falsely reported to medical providers that her daughter experienced seizures, when in fact no such seizures occurred. Noreika's deceitful actions misled medical professionals, influencing their diagnosis and treatment decisions for her child.

Pursuant to a written plea agreement, the parties agree that the offense resulted in a loss exceeding $95,000 but less than $150,000, including costs borne by insurers and the government for the daughter's unnecessary medical treatment and visits.

Noreika no longer cares for the minor child, and she faces related state charges pending. The case was investigated by the Office of Inspector General (OIG) for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Harrisburg Field Office, and the Pennsylvania State Police.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Samuel S. Dalke is prosecuting the case. The maximum penalty for the offense charged is five years of imprisonment, a term of supervised release following imprisonment, and a $250,000 fine. A sentence following a finding of guilt will be imposed by the Judge after consideration of the applicable federal sentencing statutes and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.

Noreika's actions have raised questions about the vulnerability of the healthcare system to deception and the consequences of such actions. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of honesty and transparency in medical care.
