Waterloo Man Sentenced to Decade-Long Prison Term for Unlawful Firearm Possession
A federal court in Cedar Rapids has handed down a significant sentence to Shevin Caston, a 30-year-old man from Waterloo, Iowa, for his involvement in a firearms offense. On December 7, 2020, Caston was found guilty of possessing a firearm as a felon, which led to a lengthy prison term.
The court ordered Caston to serve 92 months in federal prison, to be served consecutively with a previous sentence imposed in November 2019 for another felon in possession conviction. This means that Caston will face a total of over 11 years in prison for his crimes.
Caston's sentence comes after a guilty plea to possessing a firearm as a felon. According to statements made at sentencing, just six days prior to being sentenced in federal court on another felon in possession conviction, Caston possessed a loaded weapon while in the backseat of a car in Waterloo.
Caston must also serve a three-year term of supervised release after the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system, and Caston is currently being held in the United States Marshal's custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.
The case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an evidence-based program aimed at reducing violent crime. PSN focuses enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partners with locally based prevention and reentry programs for lasting reductions in crime.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Jake Schunk and investigated by the Waterloo Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
