Sindy Richards, Conspiracy to Distribute Methamphetamine, South Dakota 2026
RAPID CITY - In a shocking turn of events, a prolific drug dealer in western South Dakota has been sentenced to 20 years in federal prison for her role in a massive methamphetamine conspiracy.
Sindy Richards, 35, of Spearfish, South Dakota, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Camela C. Theeler on January 12, 2026, after pleading guilty to Conspiracy to Distribute a Controlled Substance in October 2025.
Richards was indicted by a federal grand jury in November 2024 and was found to have been involved in the conspiracy since 2023. During her involvement, she worked with others to obtain methamphetamine from California, which was then redistributed in and around the Black Hills.
According to investigators, Richards was closely associated with the main drug dealer in the case and assisted him in meeting with other co-conspirators within the Rapid City area to further distribute the methamphetamine. Investigators determined that Richards was involved in trafficking approximately 100 pounds of methamphetamine during her involvement in the conspiracy.
The case was investigated by the U.S. Postal Service, the Unified Narcotics Enforcement Team (UNET), and the Drug Enforcement Administration. UNET is comprised of law enforcement from the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, the Rapid City Police Department, the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, the South Dakota Highway Patrol, and the South Dakota National Guard.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Mark Hodges and Paige Petersen prosecuted the case, resulting in Richards being sentenced to 20 years in federal prison, followed by five years of supervised release, and ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Richards was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, bringing an end to her reign as a major player in the methamphetamine trade in western South Dakota.
The sentencing sends a clear message that the authorities will not tolerate the distribution of methamphetamine in the region and will continue to work tirelessly to dismantle the networks involved in this illicit trade.
