Smith Jr, Violent Crime, Maryland 2018
On June 8, 2018, the United States District Court for the District of Maryland (MDD Federal District) began hearing the highly publicized case of John Smith Jr, a defendant accused of committing violent crimes in the state of Maryland.
According to court documents, Smith Jr was charged with two counts of conspiracy to commit murder for hire and one count of attempted murder. The charges stemmed from a violent incident that occurred on February 10, 2018, in which Smith Jr allegedly conspired with two co-defendants to carry out the murder of a local business owner.
Prosecutors presented evidence that Smith Jr had been involved in various organized crime activities and had used his connections to orchestrate the attempted murder. The defense, however, claimed that Smith Jr was being unfairly targeted and that the evidence against him was circumstantial.
After a lengthy trial that lasted several weeks, the jury delivered a guilty verdict on all three counts. On October 15, 2019, Smith Jr was sentenced to 25 years in federal prison, with the possibility of parole after serving 13 years.
The case drew widespread attention due to its brazen nature and the high level of violence involved. Local law enforcement agencies praised the work of federal prosecutors in securing a conviction and bringing justice to the victims and their families.
