Stacie Ann Stevens, Destruction of Mail, Pennsylvania 2015

A shocking case of postal corruption has come to light in Hanover, Pennsylvania, where a 41-year-old postal carrier has pleaded guilty to destruction of mail.

Stacie Ann Stevens, a Hanover resident, was charged with one count of destruction of mail in a criminal information filed in U.S. District Court in Harrisburg. She pleaded guilty before Senior United States District Court Judge William C. Caldwell on March 19, 2015.

According to U.S. Attorney Peter Smith, Stevens began opening greeting cards and other mail, stealing the cash and gift cards contained inside, between July and October 2014. The theft was discovered after residents complained about missing or torn mail. A surveillance video caught Stevens using one of the stolen gift cards at a local store in October 2014.

If convicted, Stevens faces one year imprisonment and a fine of up to $100,000. However, as part of a plea agreement, she has agreed to pay restitution to the victims. Stevens has also resigned from the Postal Service.

The case is being investigated by the United States Postal Service, Office of Inspector General and the Carroll Valley Borough Police Department, with Assistant United States Attorney Daryl F. Bloom handling the prosecution.

It's worth noting that indictments and criminal informations are only allegations, and all persons charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in court. The sentence following a finding of guilty is imposed by the Judge after consideration of the applicable federal sentencing statutes and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.

Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the Judge is required to consider and weigh a number of factors, including the nature, circumstances and seriousness of the offense; the history and characteristics of the defendant; and the need to punish the defendant, protect the public and provide for the defendant's educational, vocational and medical needs.
