Stephen Cyrus, Lying on ATF Form, West Virginia 2023
Stephen Cyrus Sentenced to 5 Months in Prison for Lying on ATF Form
A Putnam County man was sentenced to prison for lying on an ATF form in an attempt to obtain firearms. Stephen Cyrus, 35, was sentenced to 5 months in prison by United States District Judge Robert C. Chambers on no date specified.
Cyrus attempted to obtain four firearms from Ultimate Pawn & Performance on March 20, 2018. He lied about whether he had been previously convicted of domestic violence on the ATF form. Cyrus was prohibited from obtaining firearms under federal law because he was convicted of domestic battery on January 19, 2018 in Putnam County, West Virginia.
“Persons with domestic violence convictions are prohibited from having firearms for good reason,” said United States Attorney Mike Stuart. “And we are working with ATF to keep guns out of the wrong hands and prevent gun crimes.”
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives conducted the investigation. Assistant United States Attorney Stephanie Taylor handled the prosecution.
The crime is a serious offense that highlights the importance of gun safety laws. Cyrus's actions demonstrate a blatant disregard for the law and put others at risk. The sentence handed down by Judge Chambers is a necessary step in holding individuals accountable for their actions.
The case serves as a reminder that gun crimes will not be tolerated in West Virginia. The Office of the United States Attorney will continue to work with law enforcement agencies to prevent gun crimes and keep communities safe.
