Steven Burning Breast, Involuntary Manslaughter, South Dakota 2020
A devastating crash in Todd County, South Dakota, on April 22, 2019, resulted in the tragic deaths of two adult victims, who were passengers in a car driven by Steven Burning Breast, 24, of Mission, South Dakota.
Burning Breast was behind the wheel of the vehicle, which was traveling eastbound on US Highway 18, when he lost control of the car and left the roadway. The vehicle rolled multiple times, causing the victims to be ejected from the vehicle. They died as a result of injuries suffered in the wreck.
Burning Breast was subsequently charged with Involuntary Manslaughter in connection with the deaths of the two victims.
On November 13, 2019, he was indicted by a federal grand jury. He pleaded guilty to the charge on July 9, 2020.
On September 28, 2020, Burning Breast was sentenced to 37 months in federal prison, followed by 3 years of supervised release, and a special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund in the amount of $100.
This case was investigated by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services and the Bennett County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kirk Albertson prosecuted the case.
Burning Breast was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
