Tallahatchie County, Intentional Discrimination, Mississippi 2024
WASHINGTON – In a shocking display of racial bias, the United States government has revealed a settlement agreement with Tallahatchie County, Mississippi, regarding allegations of intentional discrimination against Black deputy sheriffs based on their race.
The lawsuit, filed under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, claimed that Tallahatchie County paid Black deputy sheriffs less than their white counterparts, a clear violation of federal law.
‘Under Title VII, it is illegal to pay employees less because of their race,’ said Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Pamela S. Karlan of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. ‘Black deputy sheriffs in Tallahatchie County work hard to protect members of their community and they deserve equal treatment in every aspect of their employment, especially their paychecks. This settlement will ensure pay policies that promote equal employment opportunities for these public safety professionals.’
Under the terms of the settlement agreement, Tallahatchie County will pay four Black deputy sheriffs back-pay compensation for the unequal pay rates they have endured. The county will also implement a new pay policy, which will be reviewed by the federal government, to ensure no future discrimination. Additionally, Tallahatchie County will establish procedures to guarantee transparency in pay for its entire workforce of deputy sheriffs.
The investigation into Tallahatchie County's discriminatory practices was initiated by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) after the Commission found reasonable cause to believe that Title VII had been violated. After failed conciliation efforts, the EEOC referred the charges to the federal government for further action.
