Tammara Ann Hall, Wire Fraud, Florida 2013
Florida Commissioner Caught in Web of Deceit
A shocking case of public corruption has come to light in Fort Myers, Florida. Lee County Commissioner Tammara Ann Hall, 53, has agreed to plead guilty to wire fraud, a federal crime that carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.
According to the plea agreement, Hall, a/k/a Tammy Hall, diverted and embezzled approximately $33,756 of donor contributions to the Tammy Hall campaign fund from November 2009 to November 2010. She used the money for personal expenditures unrelated to the campaign, completing Florida Department of State campaign fund quarterly reports and failing to disclose that she had diverted campaign contributions to pay for personal expenses.
Hall stole from her campaign fund by transferring funds electronically from the campaign bank account to her personal bank account, by writing checks from the campaign bank account and depositing the checks to her personal bank account, and by depositing certain donor campaign contribution checks directly into her personal bank account. She used interstate wires to accomplish the electronic transfer of funds from her campaign account to her personal account at Wachovia Bank.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with Assistant United States Attorney Jeffrey F. Michelland leading the prosecution. An initial appearance and acceptance of plea hearing is set for October 3, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. before U.S. Magistrate Judge Douglas Frazier.
This brazen act of corruption has left many in the community outraged and seeking justice. Hall's actions have damaged the trust between elected officials and the public, and it is imperative that she is held accountable for her crimes.
The people of Lee County deserve transparency and honesty from their elected representatives. It is our hope that this case will serve as a warning to all public officials that corruption will not be tolerated.
