Taryn Peter Ducheneaux, Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, South Dakota 2024
A savage assault at a bonfire in Eagle Butte, South Dakota, has landed Taryn Peter Ducheneaux behind bars. The 35-year-old man was sentenced to 12 months and one day in federal prison for Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, a crime that left his victim with a serious brain injury.
According to investigators, the altercation began in the early morning hours of August 13, 2022, when the victim pulled up to a bonfire at a home in Eagle Butte to pick up some clothing from a neighbor. Ducheneaux and several others were also at the bonfire, and a verbal sparring match led to a physical fight.
During the fracas, Ducheneaux struck the victim on the head with a baseball bat. The victim suffered a serious brain injury as a result of the assault.
Taryn Peter Ducheneaux was indicted by a federal grand jury in January of 2023. He pleaded guilty on December 22, 2023, and was subsequently sentenced on January 22, 2024.
The case was investigated by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services. Assistant U.S. Attorney Carl Thunem prosecuted the case.
Ducheneaux was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service following his sentencing. He will also serve three years of supervised release and pay a special assessment of $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
