Crime Plagues Tennessee: $95 Million in Funding Announced to Improve Public Safety
The state of Tennessee is set to receive a significant boost in public safety funding, with the federal government announcing awards of approximately $95 million to support law enforcement efforts in the state. The funding, provided by the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS), Office of Justice Programs (OJP), and Office on Violence Against Women (OVW), will target violent crime, support law enforcement efforts to combat the manufacture and distribution of illicit drugs, improve officer mental health and wellness, and enhance school safety.
According to COPS Office Director Phil Keith, the funding will help keep kids safe in school, provide peer support services for law enforcement officers, and give crime victims critical resources needed to heal in the aftermath of a crime. The U.S. Attorneys for the Middle, Eastern, and Western Districts of Tennessee, Don Cochran, J. Douglas Overbey, and D. Michael Dunavant, respectively, also spoke at the announcement, expressing gratitude for the support.
Among the awards announced, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) was awarded nearly $2 million from the COPS Office for investigating illicit activities related to heroin distribution and methamphetamine trafficking. The cities of Memphis and Nashville were also awarded funding through the Law Enforcement Mental Health and Wellness Act program for their respective officer peer support programs.
The funding will also support violent crime reduction, rapid DNA analysis, school safety, and victim services, as well as provide much-needed equipment for law enforcement agencies. U.S. Attorney Don Cochran stated that the grant awards make possible programs which would otherwise be impossible to implement and provide local governments with the necessary resources to make their communities safer.
U.S. Attorney D. Michael Dunavant expressed his gratitude to Director Keith and his office for the support they continue to provide to state and local agencies. He noted that the grant resources from the COPS Office will allow state and local partners to focus on priority areas such as violent crime and drug trafficking, as well as emerging areas like school safety and officer health and wellness.
U.S. Attorney J. Douglas Overbey found the Department of Justice's continued support of its law enforcement allies to be heartening. He stated that the funding will fulfill the President's Executive Orders to reduce crime in America and Back the Blue.
