A prominent attorney from Alabama has been sentenced to prison for tax crimes and mortgage fraud. Thomas C. Goldstein, a well-known appellate attorney who argued over 40 cases before the U.S. Supreme Court and co-founded the widely read legal website SCOTUSblog, was sentenced to 72 months in prison on February 22, 2023 for his crimes.
The sentencing took place in the Middle District of Alabama, where Goldstein was found guilty of tax evasion and mortgage fraud. According to the Department of Justice, the court also revoked Goldstein's bond and remanded him into custody.
Goldstein's crimes were a serious breach of trust, given his position as a respected attorney and expert in the legal field. His sentencing serves as a reminder of the consequences of committing white-collar crimes.
