Omaha Man Sentenced to 78 Months for Receiving Child Pornography

Omaha, NE - In a disturbing case of child exploitation, Thomas I. Mawhiney, 31, was sentenced to 78 months in federal prison for receiving child pornography.

According to court documents, Mawhiney was identified by investigators with the FBI Child Exploitation Task Force in June 2016 as the individual downloading and sharing child pornography from a North Omaha residence. A search warrant was executed on the residence on July 29, 2016, and Mawhiney's electronic devices were found to contain 50 videos and 4,000 images of child pornography, many of which depicted infants and toddlers engaged in various forms of sexual acts.

Mawhiney left Omaha shortly after the search and was later convicted of armed robbery in Oregon. His federal sentence will run consecutive to his state robbery conviction, resulting in a total of 10 years and 6 months in prison.

After his release from prison, Mawhiney will serve a 10-year term of supervised release and will be required to register as a sex offender. This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.

The Omaha FBI's Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Force investigated this case. The defendant's exact criminal charges were receiving child pornography.
