Thomas Jones, Cocaine Trafficking, Maryland 2021

Baltimore, Maryland – In a major blow to the city’s drug trade, 53-year-old Thomas Jones has been sentenced to 11 years in federal prison for his role in a large-scale cocaine trafficking operation. U.S. District Judge Stephanie A. Gallagher handed down the sentence on April 2023, marking a significant victory for law enforcement agencies in the region.

According to court documents, Jones was identified as one of the key players in a conspiracy to acquire and distribute controlled substances, including cocaine and crack cocaine, in West and Northwest Baltimore. DEA investigators with the Baltimore OCDETF Strike Force uncovered the operation, which led to Jones’ eventual arrest and conviction.

As part of the investigation, law enforcement agents overheard phone calls between Jones and his co-conspirators discussing the distribution of cocaine and crack cocaine. Jones was also found to have met with customers and co-conspirators at his home in the 1600 block of Edmondson Avenue to engage in drug transactions and other illicit activities.

On April 29, 2021, authorities executed a search warrant at Jones’ residence, seizing 143 grams of cocaine, 62 grams of crack cocaine, drug packaging material, and scales. Additionally, investigators recovered a .45-caliber pistol, two standard .45-caliber magazines, and one extended magazine clip, as well as 170 rounds of .45-caliber ammunition.

Jones ultimately admitted to planning to distribute the cocaine and acknowledged that the seized cash represented proceeds from his illicit activities. The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in local communities.

The prosecution was brought as part of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) Co-located Strike Forces Initiative, which allows for the establishment of permanent multi-agency task force teams to collaborate on intelligence-driven operations against priority targets and their affiliate illicit financial networks.

United States Attorney Erek L. Barron commended the DEA and the Baltimore Police Department for their work in the investigation, while thanking Assistant U.S. Attorneys LaRai N. Everett and James T. Wallner for their efforts in prosecuting the case.

The sentence serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of engaging in large-scale drug trafficking operations. As the region continues to grapple with the opioid epidemic and rising rates of violent crime, this conviction sends a clear message that those responsible will be held accountable.
