Thomas Schropp, Arson and Insurance Fraud, Nebraska 2015

Published May 15, 2015

A ruthless businessman from Omaha, Nebraska, has been brought to justice after orchestrating a devastating arson attack on his own company and attempting to swindle millions from insurance companies.

Thomas Schropp, 53, the owner of PK Manufacturing in Nashville, Nebraska, was sentenced to a 16-year term of imprisonment by Senior United States District Judge Joseph F. Bataillon on May 14, 2015.

The 16-year sentence will be followed by a 3-year term of supervised release after Schropp's release from prison. He will also be required to make restitution in the amount of $7.6 million to various victims of his crimes, including Sentry Insurance, various banks and the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Schropp's crimes date back to November 2008, when he hired an individual to burn down his business. Following the devastating fire, he submitted a false insurance claim for approximately $4.3 million.

The investigation into Schropp's crimes was led by the Washington County Sheriff's Office and the United States Postal Inspection Service.

A 16-year prison sentence is a significant blow to Schropp, who had previously thought he could avoid accountability for his actions. However, the tireless efforts of law enforcement have brought him to justice and ensured that those affected by his crimes will receive the compensation they deserve.

The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions and the devastating consequences of arson and insurance fraud.
