Published March 19, 2025

A federal judge in Denver has handed down a 36-month prison sentence to Thuan Bui, 60, of Littleton, Colorado, for his role in preparing false tax returns for hundreds of clients.

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Colorado, Bui operated a tax preparation business under several names, falsely claiming to be a certified public accountant. From 2016 to 2021, he submitted tax returns that understated his clients' tax liability by overstating or creating false expenses on the Schedule C form.

Bui's actions, which were detailed in a plea agreement, resulted in hundreds of false tax returns. The court found him guilty of one count of aiding or assisting in the preparation of false documents.

U.S. District Court Judge Regina M. Rodriguez presided over the sentencing, which also included a $50,000 fine and one year of supervised release.

The case was investigated by the IRS-Criminal Investigation and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Rebecca Weber.

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Colorado emphasized the importance of vigilance during tax season, urging taxpayers to verify the accuracy of their returns.

Thuan Bui, whose business operated under several names, is now facing the consequences of his actions. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of trust and accuracy in tax preparation.
