Published November 13, 2025

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico - In a shocking display of violence, a Mescalero man has been charged with dragging a woman beneath a moving vehicle, causing her serious bodily injuries.

Thurman Allen Paz, 46, an enrolled member of the Mescalero Apache Tribe, is accused of striking Jane Doe in the face and head while they were in a vehicle together on September 14, 2024. In a desperate attempt to escape, Jane Doe tried to get out of the vehicle while it was moving, but Paz allegedly dragged her underneath, leaving her with serious injuries.

According to a criminal complaint filed by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jackson K. Dering V, Paz is charged with assault resulting in serious bodily injury. If convicted, Paz faces up to 10 years in prison.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs investigated this case, and Acting U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison made the announcement today.

A criminal complaint is merely an allegation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

This disturbing incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of domestic violence and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.
