Tia M. Taylor, Mail Theft, Illinois 2020

A former postal employee in Illinois is facing federal charges for allegedly stealing mail from the Godfrey post office.

Tia M. Taylor, 27, of Alton, Illinois, was indicted by a federal grand jury in the Southern District of Illinois for one count of theft of mail by a postal service employee.

According to the indictment, Taylor stole four packages addressed to Godfrey residents in July 2020 while working as a clerk at the Godfrey post office.

This is the second time this month that a postal employee in the Southern District of Illinois has been charged with stealing mail. In early October 2020, Athens A. Shorey, 33, of Cobden, Illinois, was indicted for taking mail from the Carbondale post office in May.

As a result of a referral and investigation by the United States Postal Service, Office of the Inspector General, Taylor is now facing federal charges.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Peter T. Reed.

It's worth noting that an indictment is simply a formal charge against a defendant, and as such, Taylor is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

Details of the arraignment for Taylor are as follows: date - October 8, 2020, and time - 10:30 a.m. at the federal courthouse in East St. Louis, Illinois.
