Felon in Possession of a Firearm Lands Birmingham Man in Hot Water
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - In a move that's likely to send shockwaves through the community, local resident Timothy Jabbar Wyatt, 31, of Clanton, pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm.
According to authorities, the incident in question occurred on January 15, 2023, when a Calera Police officer spotted a vehicle on the side of Interstate 65 at mile marker 229. The officer, attempting to assist, observed Wyatt standing beside the vehicle. Upon approaching, Wyatt allegedly dropped some food items and a case of water he was holding before fleeing into the nearby woods.
Calera Police officers subsequently searched for Wyatt in the woods, eventually finding him in a makeshift shelter structure next to a stream the following day. During the search, officers discovered a loaded Sundance .25 caliber pistol inside the shelter, complete with five rounds of ammunition.
The maximum penalty for being a felon in possession of a firearm is 10 years in prison. Wyatt's plea agreement will likely see him face significant time behind bars, a fate that may have been avoided had he not fled the scene.
The ATF investigated the case, working closely with the Calera Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kristy Peoples is handling the prosecution.
Wyatt's case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of carrying firearms as a convicted felon. The consequences can be severe, and in this instance, will likely be felt for many years to come.
As the case moves forward, residents of Birmingham and surrounding areas are left to wonder what drove Wyatt to make such a reckless decision. One thing is certain, however: the penalties for his actions will be severe.
With Wyatt's plea deal now in place, it remains to be seen what the future holds for this Birmingham man. One thing is for sure, however: his decision to flee the scene and possess a firearm as a convicted felon has sealed his fate.
