GREENSBORO, N.C. - 5/27/24

A shocking case of firearm corruption has shaken the state of North Carolina as a law enforcement officer has been charged with transferring guns to a known felon.

According to the United States Attorney's Office for the Middle District of North Carolina, Timothy Jay Norman, a 47-year-old North Carolina Highway Patrol State Trooper from Browns Summit, NC, is accused of transferring firearms to Tommy Lee Hudson, a 33-year-old convicted felon from Reidsville, NC.

The charges were announced by Sandra J. Hairston, Acting United States Attorney for the Middle District of North Carolina, who emphasized that a criminal complaint is merely an allegation, and each defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

Norman is charged with unlawful transfer of a firearm to a prohibited person, a federal offense that carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.

Hudson, the recipient of the firearms, is also facing serious consequences, charged with felon in possession of a firearm, another federal offense that carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.

The defendants made their initial appearances in federal court in Greensboro this afternoon, where they were detained pending their next scheduled court appearances on July 14 at 3:00 p.m. (Hudson) and 3:45 p.m. (Norman), in Greensboro Courtroom 1A.

The case has been investigated by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF).

The charges against Norman and Hudson are a stark reminder of the importance of upholding the law and ensuring that those entrusted with public safety do not engage in corrupt activities.
