Published June 23, 2017

Tampa, FL – In a shocking turn of events, a Sarasota man has been sentenced to seven years in federal prison for possessing a firearm and ammunition as a convicted felon. Timothy Tallmadge (27, Sarasota) was handed down the harsh sentence by U.S. District Judge Susan C. Bucklew on March 17, 2017, following his guilty plea to the charges.

The case against Tallmadge began on August 26, 2016, when law enforcement officers responded to a call reporting a burglary in progress in Sarasota. Upon arrival, the officers detained four individuals, including Tallmadge, for questioning. However, Tallmadge refused to comply with commands and continued to walk away from the officer, who later discovered a loaded firearm during a pat down of Tallmadge's waistband area.

At the time of the incident, Tallmadge had multiple prior felony convictions, making him prohibited from possessing a firearm or ammunition under federal law. The firearm and ammunition seized during the arrest were ordered to be forfeited by the court.

The case was jointly investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and the Sarasota Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Kaitlin R. O'Donnell is handling the prosecution.

This case is being prosecuted as part of the Department of Justice's 'Project Safe Neighborhoods' Program, a nationwide gun-violence reduction strategy. Acting United States Attorney W. Stephen Muldrow, along with Daryl R. McCrary, Special Agent in Charge, ATF, is coordinating the Project Safe Neighborhoods effort in the Middle District of Florida in cooperation with federal, state, and local law enforcement officials.

Tallmadge's sentence is a stark reminder of the consequences of breaking federal gun laws. As a convicted felon, Tallmadge was prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition, and his actions put the community at risk.

The 'Project Safe Neighborhoods' Program aims to reduce gun violence by holding offenders accountable for their actions. The program is a collaborative effort between federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies to target violent offenders and reduce gun violence in communities.
