Meridian Man Sentenced to 5 Years for Possessing Firearm Near School

Jackson, MS - A Meridian man was sentenced to 60 months in prison for possession of a firearm in a school zone, announced U.S. Attorney Mike Hurst.

Tirale Orlando Reed, 38, was sentenced by Senior U.S. District Court Judge David C. Bramlette III on August 4, 2020.

Reed was charged with possession of a firearm in a school zone in a federal Criminal Information. He pled guilty before Judge Bramlette on August 4, 2020.

On July 15, 2016, a confrontation between Reed and another individual turned violent, resulting in the shooting and killing of the individual. Reed then threw a .45 caliber handgun into a creek bed near 44th Avenue while passing through the grounds of a school.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Charles W. Kirkham.

Reed's case is part of Project EJECT, an initiative by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Mississippi to reduce violent crime.

Reed will serve 60 months in prison, followed by five years of supervised release, for his crime. This sentence highlights the consequences of violent acts involving firearms, especially in school zones.
