Mason City Man Pleads Guilty to Possession with Intent to Distribute Methamphetamine
A devastating blow to the streets of Mason City as a local resident, Todd Aaron Howard Hamilton Sutton, Jr., 33, pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute a whopping 5 grams or more of pure methamphetamine. The crime, which has left a trail of destruction in its wake, was committed on July 27, 2024.
Sutton, a resident of Mason City, Iowa, was arrested in Cerro Gordo County after being pulled over for a traffic violation. During the arrest, law enforcement discovered a plastic baggie containing methamphetamine on his person while being booked into the Cerro Gordo County Jail.
Sutton has admitted to the crime in a plea agreement, admitting to driving while barred and possessing the illicit substance. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Kevin C. Fletcher and was investigated by the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff's Department.
As a result of his guilty plea, Sutton faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 5 years' imprisonment and a possible maximum sentence of 40 years' imprisonment, a $5,000,000 fine, and 4 years of supervised release following any imprisonment. The defendant was taken into custody by the United States Marshal after the guilty plea and will remain in custody pending sentencing.
Sentencing will be set after a presentence report is prepared before United States District Court Chief Judge Leonard T. Strand. The case is being closely monitored by law enforcement and community leaders, who are calling for tougher penalties to combat the growing methamphetamine problem.
