Todd Alan Peltier, 31, Sentenced to Five Years in Federal Prison for Possession of a Firearm with an Obliterated Serial Number
SIOUX FALLS - In a federal sentencing hearing that took place on January 13, 2025, U.S. Chief Judge Roberto A. Lange handed down a five-year prison sentence to Todd Alan Peltier, a 31-year-old man from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, for his conviction of Possession of a Firearm with an Obliterated Serial Number.
Peltier was initially indicted by a federal grand jury in July 2024 on two charges: Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person and Possession of a Firearm with an Obliterated Serial Number. He pleaded guilty to the latter charge in October 2024.
The investigation into Peltier's activities began on May 23, 2024, when detectives with the Sioux Falls Police Department observed Peltier entering a vehicle and driving to a casino on West 41st Street in Sioux Falls. At the time, Peltier was on parole and had an active warrant for his arrest. Detectives entered the casino and apprehended Peltier, leading to a search incident to arrest that revealed a bag of methamphetamine in Peltier's pants pocket. A subsequent search of Peltier's vehicle uncovered a pistol with an obliterated serial number under the driver's seat. Peltier later admitted to law enforcement that he knowingly possessed the firearm.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through a collaborative effort between law enforcement agencies and the communities they serve. The strategy focuses on fostering trust and legitimacy, supporting community-based organizations, setting targeted enforcement priorities, and measuring results.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Beau J. Blouin prosecuted the case, and Homeland Security Investigations and the Sioux Falls Police Department conducted the investigation. Peltier was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, where he will serve the entirety of his five-year sentence. Additionally, Peltier was ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund as part of his sentence.
This conviction serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of gun-related crimes and the importance of community involvement in preventing such incidents.
