Todd Johns, Assault with a Dangerous Weapon and Aiding and Abetting, South Dakota 2015
A Dupree, South Dakota, man was sentenced to prison for his role in a violent assault that left a victim battered and bruised.
Todd Johns, 26, was handed down a 24-month sentence by U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange on March 23, 2015. He was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund and serve two years of supervised release.
Johns was convicted of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon and Aiding and Abetting after he and two others attacked a victim with shod feet, metal crutches, and wooden clubs in Eagle Butte in July 2014. The attack was intended to cause bodily harm.
The conviction arose from a federal indictment issued by a grand jury on September 16, 2014. Johns pleaded guilty to the charges on January 6, 2015.
The case was investigated by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Division, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Mikal Hanson prosecuting the case.
Johns was immediately taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service to begin serving his sentence.
The violent assault highlighted the need for increased vigilance in the community, with authorities urging residents to report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
