Tom Tso, Sexual Abuse, New Mexico 2023

Published November 16, 2022

A shocking case of sexual abuse has been uncovered in Tse Bonito, New Mexico. Tom Tso, an 84-year-old man and enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, has been charged with sexual abuse of a Navajo Nation member.

According to the indictment, Tso allegedly engaged in and attempted to engage in sexual acts with the victim, identified as Jane Doe, between August 4, 1998, and October 11, 2000. The alleged assault occurred on the Navajo Nation.

The Gallup Resident Agency of the FBI Albuquerque Field Office investigated this case, and Assistant United States Attorney Alexander F. Flores is prosecuting the case as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.

Tso was arraigned on November 15 and will remain at a halfway house on conditions of release pending trial, which has not been scheduled. If convicted, Tso faces up to 20 years in prison.

The indictment is only an allegation, and Tso is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. However, the severity of the charges suggests a serious crime that has had a profound impact on the victim.

This case highlights the importance of Project Safe Childhood and the need for continued efforts to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. The Navajo Nation and law enforcement agencies must work together to ensure that justice is served and that victims receive the support and protection they need.
